2020 OUTDOOR SEASON UPDATE - May 13th, 2020

Dear MHSA Members,

We would like to thank you for your patience during these difficult unprecedented times brought on by COVID-19. As you all know, Alberta has begun their relaunch strategy but there are quite a few uncertainties when it comes to community sports and how soon we will be able to start up again. The safety of our players, volunteers, staff and the community as a whole remain our top priority.

At this time, MHSA has decided to continue the suspension/postponement of our 2020 Outdoor Season. The decision was made after taking into consideration information and restrictions put in place by Canada Soccer, discussions with the Alberta Soccer Association, Government of Alberta's Relaunch Strategy, and the City of Medicine Hat's field restrictions. Full refunds will be issued to everyone that has registered for the upcoming season.

We are still hopeful that some form of soccer can be played this year. As the situation continues to evolve, and based on government recommendations, we will start up soccer as soon as it is deemed safe to do so. We don't know exactly how this will look, but we assure you that we are working behind the scenes to plan for the different scenarios so we can be ready to go as soon as we are given the go ahead.

All refunds will be issued by the end of next week, May 22nd. For anyone that has paid in office via debit, please contact admin@medicinehatsoccer.com and list your child's full name and birthdate. If you registered online, your card will be automatically fully refunded.

For more information on the nation-wide soccer activity suspension put in place by Canada Soccer, please go to Canada Soccer. The suspension includes any in-person soccer activity. Also, all sport fields in Medicine Hat are closed to organized sport associations and are only open to the public. For more information on field use restrictions, please visit medicinehat.ca.

During this time, the following are ways for everyone to stay engaged in soccer while we wait to get back on the pitch:

2020 Outdoor Season Update

Dear MHSA Members,

We hope that everyone is keeping safe and healthy during this difficult time.

MHSA staff and board of directors continue to plan and prepare for an outdoor season, even while things change daily and we are unsure when the season will start. We are monitoring the COVID-19 situation daily and are in regular contact with the governing bodies for sport and health. No one is alone in these uncertain times.

We now know that we cannot begin playing the week of April 27th, as we'd estimated a couple weeks ago. Instead, the start of our outdoor season will be postponed until Canada Soccer lifts the restriction. We remain hopeful that we will be back on the pitch in the near future!

In the meantime, we are planning for multiple different scenarios and possible start dates, so that we are ready to get players on the pitch as soon as possible after the restriction is lifted. Here are some of the possible scenarios for which we are planning:

Spring/Summer Season (June/July)
Summer Season (July/August)
Summer/Fall Season (August/September)
Fall Season (September/October, weather permitting)
Condensed Season (3 times per week for 5 weeks instead of 2)
Shortened Season (2 times per week for 4-6 weeks instead of 8)

Another change to earlier communications is that registration will remain open until the season starts. If we do get to the unfortunate point where we have to cancel the season, we will issue refunds to everyone that has registered.

At the forefront of every decision we make are the safety of our members, staff, and volunteers and compliance with governing bodies. Please stay safe and continue to do your part to flatten the curve.

Best,

Robert Cavicchia
Executive Director
